The Pleasant Valley Fire District and the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) are reminding residents to check their smoke alarms when they turn their clocks forward this Sunday, March 9th. While the long-standing “Change Your Clocks, Change Your Batteries” campaign encourages battery replacement during Daylight Saving Time, today's smoke alarms have varying battery requirements.

Working smoke alarms are a critical element of home fire safety. Take a few minutes this weekend to ensure yours are functioning correctly – it could save your life!

Here’s what you need to know about smoke alarm batteries:

10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke Alarms: These alarms have non-replaceable batteries designed to last for up to 10 years. If the alarm chirps, indicating a low battery, replace the entire smoke alarm immediately.

All Other Battery-Powered Smoke Alarms: These alarms need new batteries at least once a year. If the alarm chirps, replace the battery right away.

Battery Selection Matters: When replacing a battery, strictly follow the manufacturer's recommendations listed on the back of the alarm or in the instructions. Using the wrong type of battery can prevent the alarm from working correctly.

Test Your Smoke/CO Alarms Regularly: In addition to checking or changing batteries, test your smoke/CO alarms monthly to ensure they are functioning properly.
