Do These Things To Prepare For Storm/Wind Advisory
Email Print RSS Facebook Twitter RSS

September 5, 2022

Are you in a storm/wind advisory? Here are a few things to do in advance to prepare:

Flashlights & Batteries

* Keep the batteries and the flashlights handy.
* Know where the extra batteries are at all times. Also, check the age of the batteries in the package. Be cognitive of it. Those older batteries don't always work as long as a package of new ones.

Charge Your Phones

*Make sure that your cell phone is fully charged. You know that this can be a huge resource for anyone without power. Having this charged will be super helpful getting in touch with your local power company so they know you are without (or still without) power or family that may be concerned about you.

How Many Bottles of Water Will You Need?

* If you have a well pump (and it runs on electricity) make sure to have a few bottles of water stored for drinking. A good rule of thumb, one gallon of water per person, per day.
* As another precaution if you have a well pump, fill your bathtub with water, so you can use that water to flush toilets. Or fill a few buckets of water and keep them in the bathtub for the same use.

Check The Non-Perishable Foods Stash

* Have a few non-perishable foods on hand, that do not require cooking so you can have access to food items, just in case the power goes out.
* If you have a stash of these items specifically for this purpose, check on them once or twice per year to make sure that they are not expired.

Double Check Your Generator And Your Car

* Make sure that your car is filled with gasoline.
* If you have a portable generator make sure it is totally filled.
* Fill up those gas cans, just so you will have access to additional fuel for the car or the generator, just in case you end up needing it.

Stay calm and remember that the members of the Pleasant Valley Fire District will be there to provide help as needed...
